Her father worked in the Merchant Navy. Her younger sister is Amrita Arora who is also a bollywood actress. She completed her secondary education at Swami Vivekanand School in Chembur, Mumbai. She has done her graduation from Jai Hind College, Churchgate. She lived in Borla Society, Chembur opposite Basant Talkies before starting her modeling career.
Malaika  has started her career as a MTV VJ when MTV was launched in India. MTV India gave her prime time roles in their shows "Love Line" and "Style Check".
